Wildlife at Thanksgiving Ranch
Nothing can match the visceral thrill of witnessing animals in the wild. We are blessed with an abundant wildlife population. Every large mammal in North America calls southern Alberta home, and Thanksgiving Ranch is their front porch. As well, numerous birds of prey float in our blue skies, while smaller birds dart and swoop. Large bald eagles, silent owls, beautiful mountain bluebirds and incredible hummingbirds will often be seen in the same morning. While enjoying a morning cup of coffee on the deck, you very well could see a bear or a moose, or quickly glimpse our neighbourhood fox, or maybe a herd of deer grazing in the meadow.
We also maintain a series of nesting boxes for the mountain bluebird trial system, to allow that species a fair chance to survive threats from more competitive species. Along stretches of pasture fence, these vibrant birds’ charm with their brilliant blue.
Early morning and evening outings are the best times for wildlife viewing and birding, and the more you explore the more you are likely to see. Our varied terrain hosts rabbits, prairie dogs, badgers, deer, elk, moose, wolves, coyote, beaver, fox, black and grizzly bear and the occasional mountain lion. Bird watchers will fill in a number of their list, thrilled with sightings of bald eagles, golden eagles, falcons, kestrel, owls, hawks, osprey, grouse, waterfowl and numerous songbirds.
